The Dallas Stars Must Properly Develop Cameron Schmidt

In 2025, the Dallas Stars drafted a potential sleeper with the 94th overall pick.

A right winger who’s drawing comparisons to current NHL players Logan Stankoven, and Cole Caufield.

Cameron Schmidt, if he gets a fair shot in Dallas, can have a bright future with the team.

He could also help catapult the Stars to new heights, such as adding five-on-five scoring in the postseason.

No Fabian Brunnström 2.0

Back in October 2008, the Stars saw the debut of a rookie who, at the time, had to fight to land. Fabian Brunnström, expected to be the next Daniel Alfredsson, exploded onto the 2009 Stars with a four-goal game. After that, the rest of his career in Dallas fizzled. Brunnström would bounce back and forth between Dallas and the Texas Stars until 2011. From there, he went to the Toronto Marlies (the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) and spent the remainder of his time in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, and their AHL club the Grand Rapids Griffins.

We can look at Brunnström as a bust. Sometimes careers in the NHL just don’t pan out in the toughest competition in the world. The Stars didn’t help his case either. They didn’t give him enough time as a top-six left winger. They kept him on the last two lines and never gave him enough ice time. Brunnström never got the proper chance to succeed due to a lack of development and trust from former coaches Dave Tippett and Marc Crawford.

Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan is a younger coach who has been known to let the kids play. An opportunity for Schmidt that the Stars don’t want to pass up.

He Can Shoot the Puck

Something all Stars fans should be excited about is the shot that Schmidt can bring every night. In his scouting report, Schmidt can shoot the puck. All he does is score goals. Whether it’s through trade or drafting, you want somebody who can score goals. This especially includes five-on-five scenarios.

If Schmidt works out in the Dallas farm system and stays relatively healthy, he can help keep Dallas competitive. Another reason to be excited about the team’s future.

Schmidt Will Join the Stars Next Fall

Now with the Victoria Royals of the WHL, Schmidt will spend his time further honing his skills until he’s eligible to play in the Stars organization.

He’ll use a system that’ll mentally and physically prepare him for pro hockey.

Once he lands in Austin next fall, it won’t be long until he’s playing in Dallas. The Stars are very good at pulling guys up from the minors because of injuries or to shake up the roster for more goals.

Schmidt will get his chance to show the Stars what he’s got very soon.
