Goal Accomplished: Stars Sign Robertson to a 1-Year Deal
After a messy process where two parties couldn’t agree to terms for a while, Jason Robertson and the Dallas Stars were finally able to settle for a one-year, 12 million deal—avoiding arbitration in the process too.
No More Cap Space
Even though it’s a pay cut according to Robertson and his agent, the Stars are now out of cap space after this signing. The Stars also had to part ways with Mavrik Bourque in part to help keep Robertson in Dallas. It was a gut punch for sure. But in the salary cap world, that’s unfortunately how it had to shake out. It’s the nature of the beast.
Robertson wants to be the highest paid player in Dallas. He will, in all likelihood, prove that he deserves it. This past season, Robertson answered the ‘contract year’ by posting career numbers. Whenever there’s something to prove whether it’s the money, or getting left off of Team USA back in the Winter Olympics, Robertson goes off by playing his best.
A Net Positive for the Stars
Dallas retained their top point getter from last season. This is absolutely a positive for the Stars. You can’t win if you don’t score, and to keep the guy who scored the most for you is a good thing.
While signing Robertson is a plus, hard feelings remain. Both the team and Jason have unresolved issues regarding the deal that avoided arbitration. Everybody in the business is a professional. At the end of the day, there’s one goal above all else: winning the Stanley Cup. We can expect any minor differences to be set aside by both parties.
Worry About Next Year, Next Year
There are, of course, questions and concerns surrounding this deal. Next season, Robertson will be an unrestricted free agent. With the one-year deal Robertson signed for, he may walk straight into the market if he isn’t signed before then. But you can’t worry about something that isn’t a problem, or at least not yet. There’s no time like the present.
We’ve seen drama between Robertson and the Stars before, back in 2022. Four years ago, and this summer, things keep turning out just fine. It was only a matter of time before that bridge deal came to a close. It was a good deal then. Both Robertson and the Stars can come to a good agreement soon enough.
Let’s remember that next summer, Tyler Seguin’s contract north of nine million dollars will be up. So the Stars will have the chance to sign Robertson to a bigger contract.
It’s good to remind ourselves that Robertson is still in Dallas, and not somewhere else.
