Texas Rangers Jacob Latz Earns First All-Star Nod
Rangers closer Jacob Latz made the All-Star Team for the first time in his career.
He is the only Rangers representative for the mid-summer classic.
Latz began the year as a spot starter and long reliever. He has come a long way since then.
The Rangers lacked a closer to begin the season, trying several different options before settling on Latz. He has 18 saves, an ERA of 1.71, and a WHIP of 0.619 on the season.
Latz has been better than expected since taking over the closer’s role.
“I think he has the right demeanor for [closing],” pitching coach Jordan Tiegs told the media.
“He thrives off the moment from an adrenaline standpoint, but his brain just functions very slowly and methodically. So I think it’s like the perfect blend. He gets a little added adrenaline to help his stuff, but it never speeds him up mentally, and it never feels like the moment’s too fast or too big for him. So I think, No. 1, he gets the right mental fortitude.”
After bouncing around from role to role since being called up to the Rangers, Latz has been tested and has proven himself.
“It was just incremental steps along the way,” Latz said.
“It was a tough climb to get back from my college career to where we are now. I spent a lot of time in the Minors. Debuted in ’21, thought 2022 would be my year, but it wasn’t. In 2023, I got moved to the bullpen, and it took a while to get back up. Then little by little, I tried to solidify myself as a Major League player.”
Jacob Latz says he is honored to be the Rangers’ All-Star player, and hopes that the team continues to hang around the first-place mark in the West.

It will be interesting to see how Latz is used during the game, and it will be nice to see a late-inning Ranger pitcher.
