Texas Rangers: Best of the Worst
The Texas Rangers are back in first place in the American League West.
As we are now over halfway through the season, that is significant.
Over the past two seasons, the Rangers could never climb their way back to the top of the division; now they have.
There is, however, a downside. They are one game over .500, and they are currently the only team over .500 in the West.
I understand that it is not that impressive to be the best of the worst division. But they are at the top. Winning a division is winning a division. It doesn’t matter if you won 96 games or 86 games; you still won a division.
The Rangers don’t need to be the best team in baseball to make the postseason; they need to be the best team in the AL West.
A goal that is currently very achievable, and they currently sit in the driver’s seat.
Imagine a 3-game wild card series with deGrom, Eovaldi, and Gore pitching with Leiter and Rocker coming out of the pen. They would stack up against any team in the American League. This team would have a chance, and that is all you need in the postseason.
Remember, in 2023, they limped into the postseason, losing the division on the last day of the season. They will have to win the division to make it in 2026.
Over the past 2 seasons, the Rangers have failed to reach the .500 mark by this point in the season, resulting in no postseason births.
This season, with really oft-injured Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter, Jack Leiter, and the departures of Adolis Garcia, Marcus Semien, and Jonah Heim, the Rangers are winning.
Has it been a great season? No, otherwise the team would have a 10-game lead in the division. But it doesn’t take much to make the postseason in the American League West. It’s good enough.
Once a team makes it into October, anything can happen. I implore you not to lose hope halfway through the season.
With all the struggles and setbacks, the Rangers are currently in a playoff position and are in the driver’s seat for staying there.
