The Dog Days of Summer
The Texas Rangers are currently one game out of a division lead. This is despite a record of 35-36 with the dog days of summer approaching.
No one team seems to want to win the American League West.
With injuries to Corey Seager, Evan Carter, Michael Helman, Carter Baumler, Chris Martin, and others, the team is struggling at the moment. On the other hand, they struggled even when all those guys were healthy.
The Rangers have their first opportunity in a while to make the postseason, the first time since 2023. Of course, they won it all in 2023.
They need to start playing better baseball during the dog days of summer, a time when teams start grinding through injuries and slumps.
If the Texas Rangers can have players snap out of that slump, like Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford.
They have the talent; they need to play up to their talent.
Pitching has been good, obviously with a few hiccups here and there. The starting rotation is keeping the Rangers in most games, and the bullpen is also keeping it close on most nights.
The problem is that playing .500 ball may not be good enough in the end. It probably will not be enough to win the division.
While I am not an expert, I would guess that 84-87 wins will win the West. Right now, the Rangers are on pace for 80-83.
I believe they can, I am just not sure. I believe they will. We have watched two-plus seasons of uninspired baseball from the Texas club. Believing that this year can end differently is only because the division is worse, not because the team is better.
If the Rangers can take control of the division during the dog days of summer, they have a great chance of winning the West.
If not, it will be the 3rd straight disappointing season for fans.
