Do the Texas Rangers Need Major Changes?
The Texas Rangers won the 2023 World Series. It was a great moment for all fans of the franchise.
If you look only two years back in baseball history, you would never know this team completed that feat.
After losing 6 of their last 9 games to opponents who have the worst records in baseball, one begins to wonder who this team is.
People keep screaming that 2023 was an anomaly, and the Rangers are making them look smart. Their offense has been lifeless and uninspired for 2 plus seasons.
The pitching, which has been the only consistently good part of the team, cannot have one bad inning, or the game is lost.
All of these problems beg the question: Should the Rangers start over and completely rebuild?
Many critics and fans alike would answer yes to that question.
It Usually Comes Down to Money
The ownership group doesn’t want to spend more money, and some of their investments are not working out. I can understand them being gun-shy when the offense, which on paper is great, is dreadful.
Pre-season predictions all had the Angels as the basement dwellers in the American League West, but the Rangers gave them a big boost over the weekend by getting swept.
The bullpen is being overused, which is leading to more injuries (Cole Winn, Robert Garcia, Carter Baumler). Some of the bullpen arms are not having a good season; Chris Martin comes to mind.
That is not to mention the starting offensive players on the IL: Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, Josh Smith, and Cody Freeman.
Offensive and Defensive Woes
Seager is having his worst offensive season in his career, while the defense as a whole has taken a huge step back.
Major miscommunications, as well as just bad play in the field, have led to several losses this season. I’m not ready to blame Skip Schumaker for all the problems, but he sometimes seems to have an interesting way of managing his players.
He was asked about removing Alejandro Osuna, who was 3-for-3 in the game, as a pinch hitter, and his answer was:
“It was the right thing to do.”
Can It Be Fixed?
If I could answer that question, I would be helping the team and not writing articles about them.
Texas has talent, but they are underperforming as a team, and their pitchers seem to feel they need to throw perfect pitches to keep the team in the game.
2026 is far from a lost season. The American League West is not very good, so that any team could win it.
If the Rangers don’t find a way to fix what is happening on the field, they will not be in the mix for very much longer.
