Getting to Know Gavin Collyer
Gavin Collyer has only three innings under his belt with the Texas Rangers, as he has joined the team due to injuries to Carter Baumler and Chris Martin.
Collyer has not allowed a run in the three innings that he has appeared in. His stuff has looked good, but the youngster had trouble with his command, walking 2 and striking out 3.
Those strikeouts have come against the Athletics and the Mariners. His first one came against Lawrence Butler on his four-seam fastball, getting him looking. His other two came on the sweeper, getting Leo Rivas swinging and getting Julio Rodriguez looking.
He has only allowed one hit to Josh Naylor on a cutter that caught too much of the plate. He has shown off his impressive stuff, but I’m going to look into his pitches to see what is working for him.
Pitch Mix
Collyer uses all four pitches pretty evenly, with the cutter and the four seamer at 26 percent, with the sweeper and sinker coming in at 24 percent.
The cutter is the only pitch that he has allowed a hit on. It generates the second spin out of all his pitches with 2705 rotations per minute. This leads to the cutter having the best movement of his pitches; the pitch usually drops down.
It works well against lefties as it cuts inside on them, usually leading to weak contact.
The four seamer comes up next. It is the fastest pitch in the entire Rangers bullpen, coming in at an average of 97.8 mph. It generates the highest whiff rate at 50 percent.
The sinker has been his worst pitch. It has generated no swings and misses or putaways. The pitch has also been hit hard with an average exit velocity of 107.6. The launch angle that hitters are getting on it is -19, so hitters are just hitting it into the ground.
Finally, his put-away sweeper is his best pitch. It reaches the most spins, at 2902 rotations per minute.
The pitch rises and moves towards the third base line. It has a 33 percent whiff rate and a 40 percent put-away rate.
None of Collyer’s pitches have good launch angles against them. The sinker and sweeper have negative launch angles, while the cutter is only at 4, and the four-seamer is at 69.
This shows his ability to keep the hitters off balance, and he does a good job at mixing up his pitches.
Collyer is the wild card in the bullpen for the Rangers.
He could be a really good piece for them and has the potential to close some games.
