Early Breakout Candidates for the Cowboys in the 2026 Season
Dallas enters the 2026 season with more questions than usual, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

This offseason changes everything. A full, healthy training camp gives Revel the chance to build continuity rather than play catch-up. Revel showed flashes of the traits that made him an intriguing outside-corner prospect, including length, recovery speed, and man-coverage upside on the boundary. With Christian Parker now leading the defense, those tools could give Dallas another flexible option on the outside.
A starting role is within reach, and the impact could be significant. Moving DaRon Bland inside adds flexibility, while stronger boundary coverage tightens the unit. A more reliable secondary not only limits big plays, but it also allows the defense to play faster and more aggressively.
DeMarvion Overshown // Linebacker
Few players on the roster carry as much “if everything clicks” upside as DeMarvion Overshown. His career so far has been defined by flashes of elite athleticism interrupted by injuries, but when he’s on the field, the difference is clear.
Overshown moves like a modern linebacker, fast, fluid, and capable of impacting both the run and passing game. Dallas saw that potential in stretches last season, particularly late in the year when he began to look more comfortable and confident.
A contract year adds urgency, and a new defensive scheme could better unlock his strengths. With more chances to attack downhill, Overshown can use his range to stop the run, cover in space, and contribute as a pass rusher.

Ryan Flournoy // Wide Receiver

CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens will draw consistent attention, leaving space underneath. Flournoy showed late last season that he understands how to find those openings, particularly in the middle of the field.

Dallas doesn’t need him to be a star. They need consistency and timely production, and if Flournoy delivers, the Klayton Adams offense becomes far less predictable and more efficient across key downs and scoring situations.
Shemar James // Linebacker
Shemar James earned trust quickly as a rookie, no small feat for a fifth-round pick. He grew into a meaningful role last season and gave Dallas the linebacker snaps it needed in a defense that was looking for more stability.
His athleticism has never been in question. Speed and physicality show up immediately on tape, but the challenge has been processing, reading plays quickly, communicating adjustments, and staying disciplined within the scheme.
Year 2 often brings the biggest leap, especially with a simplified role. Coaches are expected to reduce their mental load, allowing them to play faster and let their instincts take over. That’s typically when players like James begin to stand out.
His growth could help stabilize a defense that struggled against the run and gave up too many easy gains. More consistency at linebacker also creates better situations for the pass rush, something Dallas needs to rediscover.
Jaydon Blue // Running Back
Jaydon Blue’s rookie season felt like a slow burn. Limited opportunities and inconsistent usage kept him off the field for stretches, but the season finale offered a glimpse of what he can do when given space in a more expanded offensive role.
One game doesn’t define a player, but it can shift perception. Blue’s explosiveness stood out. Quick acceleration, sharp cuts, and the ability to turn a small crease into a big gain make him different from most backs on the roster.
