Cowboys Hold Two First-Round Picks as Defense Looms Large in 2026 NFL Draft

The Cowboys have two chances to draft potential cornerstones early with picks No. 12 and No. 20.
Dallas allowed the most points per game in the league, prompting an offseason search for a new defensive coordinator.
The first-round pick acquired in the Micah Parsons trade offers flexibility to invest heavily in defense in late April.
So, who might Dallas target?
According to an analysis published by NFL.com, the Cowboys’ top needs entering the draft are edge rusher, safety, cornerback, linebacker, and wide receiver.
Most draft projections and league speculation suggest Dallas selects defensive players at both No. 12 and No. 20.
LB Sonny Styles // Ohio State
An ESPN mock draft by analyst Matt Miller projects the Cowboys selecting Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles. Styles’ speed and range make him an appealing option at the second level of the defense.
ESPN notes that he could provide an immediate upgrade and complement DeMarion Overshown, forming a fast and versatile linebacker duo.
EDGE David Bailey // Texas Tech
Another popular projection has Dallas targeting edge rusher David Bailey out of Texas Tech. Bailey tied for the FBS lead with 14.5 sacks last season, showcasing elite burst and pass-rushing ability.
Bailey, one of the top edge prospects in the draft, could be selected prior to Dallas’ top pick. If he were to slide, however, Dallas would be hard-pressed to pass on his production and upside.
EDGE T.J. Parker // Clemson
At No. 20, Clemson edge rusher T.J. Parker has also emerged as a potential fit. After a slow start to his college career, Parker has rapidly climbed draft boards thanks to his length, strength, and improved technique.
His ability to set the edge against the run while contributing as a pass rusher aligns with Dallas’s defensive priorities.
“Dallas needs an immediate-impact edge rusher, and Parker has the necessary traits and production,” an ESPN NFL draft analyst wrote.
“His elite run defense helps make him a fit in Dallas, especially with owner Jerry Jones’ stated desire for stout run defenders.”
With two first-round picks at its disposal, Dallas has a rare opportunity to reshape its defense quickly.
Whether the Cowboys prioritize speed at linebacker, dominance off the edge, or a combination of both could define the franchise’s direction for years to come.
