Why the Rangers’ Rotation Could Be the Best in Baseball
The Texas Rangers may have one of the best rotations in baseball after the addition of MacKenzie Gore.
The pitching staff led the MLB in ERA last year with a 3.47 ERA.
Jacob deGrom
Jacob deGrom headlined the rotation and turned the clock back to his dominant self as he threw the most innings since 2019, earning an All-Star nod. He had a 2.97 ERA with 185 strikeouts and 2.9 WAR (Wins Above Replacement).
Nathan Eovaldi
Nathan Eovaldi continues to get better the longer that he is a Ranger. This was his best year with a 1.73 ERA and 129 strikeouts, and he led the pitching staff with a 4.3 WAR. However, he did not earn an All-Star nod, and that was due to injuries. He battled injuries throughout the year, only being able to throw 130 innings.
Despite that, Eovaldi was still amazing, and there is a good chance that he will be healthy this year.
Jack Leiter
Jack Leiter took a big step forward and showed that he belongs in a big league rotation. The righty from Vanderbilt had a 3.86 ERA with 148 strikeouts in 151.2 innings and a 0.4 WAR.
These are not the most impressive stats, but it is an improvement from the year before, when he posted an 8.83 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 35.2 innings and a -1.6 WAR. This growth shows that he can be a middle-of-the-rotation arm.
MacKenzie Gore
Gore is likely to slot into the third spot in the rotation behind deGrom and Eovaldi. He is coming off an All-Star year in which he posted a 4.17 ERA with 185 strikeouts over 159.2 innings and 3 WAR. Those stats don’t jump off the page, but it was a tale of two halves for Gore.
He had a phenomenal first half with a 3.02 ERA in 110.3 innings, while he hit a wall in the second half with an ERA that ballooned to 6.75.
The Rangers need him not to get worn down in the second half and to finish as strong as he started. There is a belief that they get that out of him with less pressure. He went from being the ace on a bad Nationals team that relied a lot on him; he will slot into the middle of the rotation and get the chance to learn from deGrom and Eovaldi.
There is no guarantee this will lead to improvement, but the environment could benefit the young lefty, and the Rangers clearly believe in him after surrendering a significant haul of prospects to acquire him.
5th Spot
The final spot in the rotation is up for grabs. The battle is between long man and spot starter Jacob Latz and high draft pick Kumar Rocker. Latz was great last year with a 2.84 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 85.2 innings and posted a 1.4 WAR.
Rocker had a tougher go of it. He posted a 5.74 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 64.1 innings as he moved between the Rangers and Triple-A. He is still immensely talented, and there is hope within the organization and among the fans that Rocker will be able to figure it out and get over the hump, as his former teammate, Jack Leiter, did.
The rotation is one of the most stacked in the league, and it could lead the Rangers to the playoffs.
