The Truth to the Corey Seager Rumors
At the winter meetings, there have been rumors that teams were asking the Rangers about Corey Seager.
Reporters and fans of teams on social media quickly circulated the claim that their teams were interested in Seager and were putting together packages they could send to the Rangers for the star shortstop.
Reasons Why They Would Trade Him
There is really only one reason the Rangers would compete through a complete rebuild and decide to trade Seager, who is coming off a six-WAR season.
They have not been private about their willingness to shed payroll. They could get out of his contract and would put the team in a good spot. However, the team is not just going to trade him to get off the contract; they will only do it if they are blown away by an offer.
Reasons Why They Wouldn’t Trade Him
Seager is a legend in Texas for leading them to their only World Series Championship and claiming the World Series MVP for his effort. He is still the best player left on the team despite the injuries that he deals with. He is also an underrated defensive player with four outs above average.
The fans would also burn the city to the ground if the team chooses to trade Seager so soon after Luka Doncic and Micah Parsons were.
He just put up a six-WAR season while playing only 102 games and posted an OPS+ of 151. He is still a very good player, and the Rangers would be dumb if they tried to move on from him right now.
Verdict
The Rangers should hold onto Seager unless they’re blown away by an offer, which would send the team into a full rebuild and lead them to trade off the good veterans they have.
I think this team can make the playoffs if all the pieces click, and I believe Seager can lead them there.
So they should see how this season plays out before deciding on Seager.
