Texas Rangers Shedding Fan Favorite Coaches
The Texas Rangers’ coaching staff is undergoing an overhaul under new manager Skip Schumaker.
Chris Young and Schumaker are planning to go a totally different direction, it would appear.
We begin with some statistics: since the end of the 1990 season, the Texas Rangers have had 5 seasons with an ERA under 4.00. Mike Maddux was the pitching coach in all 5 seasons.
Mike Maddux Gone
In fact, since the end of the 1990 season, they have had 14 seasons with an ERA of 4.50 or lower. Mike Maddux was the pitching coach for 10 of those seasons.
Maddux makes a massive difference for any team he is a part of as a pitching coach, and I believe the pitching will suffer as a result of his being gone to the Angels.
Tony Beasley Exits
The other fan favorite who was let go was Tony Beasley. As one of my favorite coaches to talk to when I attend Dallas Sports Nation games, I am personally sad to see him go.
He was an inspiration to players, media, and fans alike. It will be different to cover a game without Beasley there to talk to.
No More Bobby Wilson
The third coach was Bobby Wilson, the catching coach. The Rangers have had one of the best catching staffs in baseball defensively over his tenure here, and he will also be missed.
I understand that change is inevitable, but it seems like the 2023 Rangers coaching staff is all gone at this point. The Rangers are definitely moving in a different direction after back-to-back disappointing seasons.
We, of course, do not know who will be next in these positions; we know who it will not be. There will most likely be more cuts to come as the team looks to cut salary for the upcoming season anyway they can.
According to Sports Illustrated, Chris Young said during his end-of-year press conference that the team does not intend to spend above the first competitive balance tax threshold in 2026, which is $244 million. There is good news for the Rangers in that regard.
