PREVIEW: FC Dallas Travels to Vancouver for Decision Day
The Burn have it all to play for at BC Place on Decision Day as they travel north to play the Whitecaps in a game that may determine their playoff status.
Let’s talk scenarios, projected lineups, and what Dallas needs to do to pull off an unlikely win and clinch a playoff spot.
Following a 2-1 loss to the Galaxy in a game that would have clinched playoffs, FCD have given themselves quite the hurdle to clear to get themselves in with no help. Vancouver has been one of the best teams all season. They’ve been at or near the top of the table since the opening weeks, got all the way to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final, and also won the Canadian Championship. Recently signed Thomas Müller and recently returned from injury Ryan Gauld lead the headlines. Still, Jesper Sørensen has worked magic in his first season, dealing with a rash of injuries throughout 2025 and hardly missing a beat.
Vancouver beat Dallas 1-0 at Toyota Stadium way back on March 15th, but Dallas has earned draws at BC Place in both of the last two seasons. A draw for the ‘Caps would be good enough to clinch the top spot in the west.
But Dallas will be looking for a win to lock them into the playoffs and potentially finish as high as 7th if Portland loses to San Diego. A draw would be helpful; only wins from both RSL in St Louis and Colorado hosting LAFC would knock FCD out of the playoffs. But a loss would require a good bit of help; any two of a Colorado win/draw, RSL win/draw, and San Jose win would knock the Burn out of the postseason.
Safe to say there will be plenty of scoreboard watching from Dallas fans on Saturday night.
Projected Lineups
Vancouver Whitecaps
Vancouver has largely played out of a 4-2-3-1 lately and is dealing with a number of injuries, mostly at centerback, with Tristan Blackmon, Ranko Veselinovic, and Sebastian Schonlau all out injured. They’ve pulled defensive midfielder Ralph Priso back lately, and also have young defender Halbouni available. They may opt to go with Halbouni, but Priso has had success, so I’ve penciled him in.
Ali Ahmed, Jayden Nelson, and Andres Cubas all return from international break and take their spots back. Also missing due to injury is striker Brian White. Vancouver has used Daniel Rios to this point, and they may stick with him, but I have a hunch they’ll start Ryan Gauld and Thomas Müller together for the first time. Gauld won’t go the full 90, but I suspect the ‘Caps will want to see them start together ahead of the playoffs.
FC Dallas
Boy, what a challenge Eric Quill has on his hands. Dallas is down three starters following the disaster in Carson, with Logan Farrington out due to his controversial red card and Petar Musa and Ramiro both out due to yellow card accumulation.
There are several ways Dallas could approach this, but I think they’ll go pretty straightforward and attempt to change as little as possible. Shaq Moore comfortably slides back out to right wingback to replace Ramiro, with Sebastien Ibeagha returning to the backline. Up top, Anderson, Julio, and Sam Sarver, who combined so well on Dallas’ goal in LA, should get the start and try to get in behind Vancouver.
The other change I have is in goal, with Maarten Paes returning from international duty (and disappointment) with Indonesia. With FCD missing so many on-field leaders, I think Quill will turn to his captain, Paes, and hand him the start.
Three Keys to the Match
1) Don’t Go Down Early
Vancouver is a scary team in general, but they are especially scary when chasing a game, just ask the Philadelphia Union, who got blasted 7-0 on their trip to BC Place. Dallas doesn’t necessarily need to score first, but going down 1-0 in the first 15-20 minutes will make any sort of comeback incredibly difficult.
The pace of the likes of Jayden Nelson and Ali Ahmed, coupled with the intelligence and finishing of Muller and Gauld, makes for a lethal combination.
2) Play Ugly
Dallas hasn’t played the most attractive soccer all of 2025, and, without the spearhead of their attack of late, they aren’t likely to do so in Vancouver. But they should embrace that and all the ugly aspects of the game. Play hard, play right on the edge of dirty, and play the numbers game at times, whatever it takes to get a result from this one is going to have to happen to have any shot at reaching their goal.
3) Take Your Chances
Vancouver has a strong defense, but it isn’t impenetrable, and they are missing some key personnel in their backline. Dallas will have chances to score goals, but they have to be ruthless.
They can not afford to blow clear-cut opportunities when they are presented. In other words, FCD needs to make sure they bring their finishing boots across the border.
