Wyatt Langford Potential Contract Extension
Wyatt Langford is a building block for the Texas Rangers and could already be their best player at only 23 years old.
It has been reported that the Rangers are going to make working out an extension with him a priority this offseason.
He took a step forward from his rookie year as he finished the year with a slash line of .241/.344/.431 with 22 home runs and 62 RBIs, along with 22 stolen bases, compared to .253/.325/.415 with 16 home runs and 74 RBIs with 19 stolen bases.
His OPS+ increased, and he walked more than in his rookie year. He posted a season with 5.6 WAR compared to his 3.9 WAR rookie year.
What Would a Contract Look Like?
The Rangers would hope to get Langford to sign a contract similar to Roman Anthony and Jackson Merrill who got eight years $130 million and nine years $135 million. Anthony has posted a WAR of 3.1 in his first year, and Merrill posted a 4.4 WAR in his best year. So Langford would look to secure a slightly larger contract than what the two of them received.
Another player to compare him to would Julio Rodriguez who got a 12 year $209.3 million contract, this came off the heels of a 6.2 WAR rookie season. Langford should not receive much, as he has not reached the heights of Rodriguez, but their situations are compared as young players trying to secure long-term contracts.
His Agent
His agent is BB Abbott, who has represented players like Byron Buxton and Matt Olson. Buxton signed a seven-year $100 million deal in 2021 with the Twins. In 2021, he posted 4.9 WAR, showcasing his tools. That gives him an AAV of $14.28 million; however, something that was always going to limit Buxton was the injuries that he suffered. Langford has dealt with injuries like Buxton, so that can keep his price up.
Now onto Olson, he is on a eight year $168 million, that gives me an AAV of $21 million. He earned this after posting a 5.9 WAR. The reason his WAR is lower than it should be is due to his defensive position, as first base does not provide a lot of value.
After looking through these contracts, I would expect Langford to get something along the lines of eight to nine years, worth $145 million to $155 million. That would give him an AAV of $17.22 to $18.125
That would be a good deal for the Rangers if they can get Langford and his agent to agree to this.
