Texas Rangers Season Blessedly Over
The Texas Rangers just finished a season marred by a lack of offensive production, injuries, and, at times, a lack of culture.
They finally scored some runs in the last game of the season, but still found a way to lose 9-8.
“It’s funny, as a manager, you go in every year thinking you’re going to get there [to the postseason] and you’re going to win,” Bruce Bochy told the media.
“I think we all feel like we underachieved because we believed we would get there this year. We didn’t get there. So that means we underachieved.”
The Rangers had the best pitching staff in the majors, and they also had the best defense in the majors. But they couldn’t hit.
Really couldn’t hit. Embarrassingly so.
The team has 13 expiring contracts, including Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Danny Coulombe, Phil Maton, Hoby Milner, Shawn Armstrong, Patrick Corbin, and Rowdy Tellez, among others.
Texas could also cut ties with Adolis Garcia and Bruce Bochy; only time will tell. For a team with Garcia, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Joc Pederson, and Wyatt Langford, this team underperformed at an epic level.
This is a team that, on paper, should have been one of the best offenses in baseball, but in reality, they were nothing close to that.
“We are loaded with power hitters. But power hitting is streaky.” President of baseball operations Chris Young said.
“And power hitters tend to have high strikeout or flyout rates. We need players who can hit for contact. We need to prioritize batting average.”
The Rangers hit the fourth fewest home runs, the fifth fewest hits, the seventh fewest runs, and the sixth fewest walks.
The offense was lethargic on a good day. IT was downright unwatchable on a bad day.
“Everybody standing around waiting to get hot, and it ain’t happening. There is something fundamentally wrong that has to get addressed,” a fan on Facebook noted.
The season ended for the Rangers on Sunday, and they have a lot of reflection to do. This team may need to be rebuilt from the ground up.
Their stars aren’t getting any younger. Seager has had the injury bug every season he’s been here.
Semien is starting to break down as well. I hate to think 2023 was an anomaly, but it really is looking that way.
Hopefully, the Rangers can rebuild during the offseason and make Texas Baseball Great again.
