They currently compete in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) as a member of the Western Conference.

The team has been established since 1998 and has achieved great success. However, it has also experienced many changes in identity, which leads to an even more colorful backstory.

Today, we look at the Dallas Wings and the rich history that follows them.

Origins and Early Years

The Dallas Wings were initially founded in Auburn Hills, Michigan, as the Detroit Shocks in 1998. They then joined the WNBA and went on to have a successful 11 years as the Detroit Shocks. In this time, they finished 1st on 3 separate occasions and won the WNBA Finals 3 times, with 1 of these wins coming during a 2nd place finish. Among these seasons, however, the Shocks experienced some ups and downs, with them finishing dead last in 2002 and almost being folded entirely.

However, in the following season, they won the league with a 25-9 record and beat the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2003 WNBA Finals, becoming the first team to ever go from last place to WNBA Champions the following season.

Tulsa Shock

Then, in 2010, Tulsa was selected as a potential city for WNBA expansion. After multiple meetings with Tulsa businesspeople, organising committees, politicians, and league officials, it was decided that the Detroit Shock would relocate to Tulsa. In 2010, the Detroit Shock underwent a name change and became the Tulsa Shock, and moved to Oklahoma. In addition, their team colors were changed to black, red, and gold, signifying a new era for the Tulsa Shock.

However, despite the success of the WNBA’s relocation and expansion, the now Tulsa Shock did not share a similar fate in terms of performance. Across six league seasons, the Tulsa Shock failed to qualify for the playoffs in five. In the final season, they managed to qualify for the playoffs; however, they lost in the semifinals to the Phoenix Mercury.

Arrival in Texas

So far, the Dallas Wings have spent the bulk of their history not based in Texas and under the alias The Shocks. All this was due to change in 2015 when WNBA league owners unanimously decided to approve the relocation of the Tulsa Shocks to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to play out of the College Park Centre at the University of Texas. Along with this relocation, the Tulsa Shock changed their name to the Dallas Wings, which is what we know them as to this day. Furthermore, along with this host of changes, they also revealed new uniforms, with the dark uniforms being predominantly blue and the light uniforms primarily light green.

Modern State of the Dallas Wings

As the Dallas Wings, the team has experienced mixed fortunes with 5 playoff finishes across 9 seasons; however, only once have they managed to make it past the first round of the playoffs. Therefore, the team’s only success has come during their time as the Detroit Shocks; however, each season is a fresh start for every team, and the Dallas Wings are continually looking to change their fortunes with every game they play.

Notable Players

The Dallas Wings have been home to two WNBA Hall of Famers, with the first being Nancy Lieberman. Nancy Lieberman is a foundational figure in the history of the Dallas Wings franchise, tracing back to her time with the Detroit Shock. As the team’s first head coach and general manager when it entered the WNBA in 1998, Lieberman brought instant credibility and a deep knowledge of the game. Before her coaching career, she was already a Hall of Fame player, known as one of the pioneers of women’s basketball.

Then there is Lynette Woodard, who made a brief appearance in the WNBA during its early days, playing for the Cleveland Rockers in 1997 and later joining the Detroit Shock in 1998. As a trailblazer in the sport, Woodard was the first woman to play for the Harlem Globetrotters and is widely celebrated for her impact on women’s basketball both nationally and internationally.

Conclusion

From their beginnings as the Detroit Shock to their current identity in Dallas, the franchise has significantly shaped the WNBA.

With Hall of Famers like Nancy Lieberman and Lynette Woodard tied to its legacy, the team’s evolution is rich with moments worth remembering.
