Sovereignty’s victory in the Kentucky Derby came on a muddy track at Churchill Downs. The horse won by 1.5 lengths, completing the 1 1/4 miles in a time of 2:02.31. The performance showcased not only his stamina and tactical speed but also his ability to handle adverse track conditions—an asset that adds to his appeal heading into the Belmont.
Sovereignty’s sire, Into Mischief, has produced multiple Kentucky Derby winners, although none have gone on to win the Belmont. Given the pedigree and the Derby win, Belmont betting markets are likely to favor Sovereignty as a frontrunner, despite the skipped Preakness. His rest between races and proven ability at this distance make him a strong contender in a field that may include less-seasoned or more fatigued rivals.
Why Skip the Preakness?
Trainer Bill Mott indicated that skipping the Preakness Stakes was a decision made with the horse’s best interest in mind. Sovereignty sustained a minor scrape on the outside of its right front pastern after the Derby.
While the possibility of a Triple Crown bid was considered, the team chose to prioritize Sovereignty’s well-being, allowing the colt to be well-rested for the Belmont Stakes. This mirrors a previous instance in 2022 when Derby winner Rich Strike also skipped the Preakness.

Only five horses have completed the Triple Crown since 1948. Looking at past Belmont winners specifically, Dornoch won the 2024 race with closing odds of +1500.
