2025 Kentucky Derby Early Contenders

The 2025 Kentucky Derby will take place on May 3rd at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
The field is pretty much set, and you can now start to dig into research on the expected field of 20 horses.
Below, I will outline the odds for some of the favorites a few weeks before the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
The odds below were taken from a popular online sportsbook that offers Kentucky Derby betting in Texas.

Journalism // +300
Journalism is the early favorite to win this year’s Kentucky Derby. This is a horse that has won four straight races dating back to November of 2024. He looked grea,t earning the win down the stretch at the Santa Anita Derby on April 5th.
That win showed he has the ability to perform in 1 1/8 mile races, and the Derby’s length of 1 ¼ miles should not be an issue.
Sovereignty // +800
Sovereignty did not win the Florida Derby on March 29th, instead finishing second to Tappan Street, but he will still enter the Kentucky Derby as the horse from that race with the shortest odds to win the big race. Sovereignty looked like he still had a lot left in the tank at the end of the Florida Derby, but started his run too late. This bodes well for the Kentucky Derby, which is 1/8th of a mile longer than the Florida Derby.
Sandman // +1000

Sandman is coming off a win at the Arkansas Derby. It was an impressive showing that saw Sandman finish ahead of Coal Battle (finished 3rd), whom Sandman lost to (3rd place finish) at the Rebel Stakes in February.
Sandman may be a horse that benefits from the longer distances like the Kentucky Derby will provide.
Luxor Café // +1000
Luxor Café is a horse that will be making the trip from Japan to compete in the Kentucky Derby. This horse won both of his races in Japan in February and March, but it remains to be seen how he will look against elite competition at the Kentucky Derby. This is a fast horse with high upside.
Citizen Bull // +1200), Burnham Square // +1200, Tappan Street // +1200
These three horses round out the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby.
Citizen Bull had a disappointing fourth-place finish at the Santa Anita Derby last month, but he won his previous three races, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November.
Burnham Square is coming off a win at the Blue Grass Stake, winning 3 of his last 4 races. Tappan Street held off Sovereignty to win the Florida Derby last month, and finished 2nd to Burnham Square at the Holy Bull race in February.
The odds will change as we approach Derby Day on May 3rd, but I expect the above horses to be in the conversation as morning line favorites.
