When Fighting Back is Not Enough

On Sunday, the Texas Rangers showed some fighting spirit, returning from an 8-2 deficit and eventually losing 8-7.
The team was down 8-3 after 7 innings.

While it is good to see the team fighting back from a bad start to a game, it’s not enough at this point of the season.

The Rangers need wins.

The Rangers are now 7.5 games behind Houston and Seattle, with only 44 games left in the season. To catch up, it will take a heck of a meltdown from the teams in front of them and a massive win streak from the Rangers.

In my opinion, it is time to start looking to the future. Let some young players get some time at the major league level.

Andrew Heaney, David Robertson, Kirby Yates, Max Scherzer, Nathan Eovaldi, Jose LeClerc, Travis Jankowski, and several others will be non-returning players in 2025.

The Rangers will have to reboot and have no money to do it with.

This is not ideal for a team trying to return to the World Series.

While the team will never say they are out of the race, fans can look at it with history and perspective on their side and realize it’s over for 2024.

The Rangers have tried several starting pitchers who did not work out from their minor league system and players like Justin Foscue (who got injured).

The minor league system is sound, but how many are ready to produce on a major league team? I believe it is time to find out. I could start designating for assignment players that will not return in 2025. Not all of them, obviously, but I would give some of the prospects some time in the majors in 2024.

Guys like Jack Leiter need another shot, maybe Blain Crim, Marc Church, Ryan Garcia, etc.

For example, if the Astros won every other game for the remainder of the season, they would have 85 wins.

The Rangers would have to go 30 and 14 to finish with the same record. And that is the best-case scenario.

Enjoy the remainder of the season for what it is.
Prepping for 2025.
