Hockey is a sport where teams must perform consistently night in and night out.

The Dallas Stars won 6 out of their last 8 games. Most instances put that as a great run. 6 out of 8 wins is good enough to drop the Stars down to 3rd in the division. The Stars cannot gain any ground when the Avalanche and Jets are on their hot winning streaks. The Avalanche are on a 7-game winning streak, spoiling the Stars’ fun. Now it’s crunch time in a hot division race with 13 games left. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd is the finishing position for the Stars in the most competitive division. Where will the Stars finish?

Give and Take

The Stars won games they shouldn’t have and lost games they should’ve won. Being down late in the 3rd period against the San Jose Sharks prepped for a soul-crushing loss. Wyatt Johnston and Logan Stankoven help the team roar back from a late 6-3 deficit to win the game in overtime. That was a game primed to lose, but they pulled off a big win. The other way around is the game against the Florida Panthers. A blown 3-0 lead to the Panthers scoring 3 in a short time frame in the 3rd. That regulation loss did not need to happen in such a short race. Those two lost points may end up as the difference between 1st and 3rd.

Toughest Division

The Central is by far the toughest division to play in this year. The 3rd place Stars have 91 points. The next best 3rd place team is the Maple Leafs with 85. The 2nd lowest point differential between all 1st and 3rd place teams is 12. Two points separate the Stars and the 1st place Jets. Even the Nashville Predators are 8-0-2 in their last 10 while climbing into the 1st wildcard spot. The Predators have all but secured a playoff spot. Winning the division is great, but the ultimate goal is getting far into the playoffs. It’s been 25 years since the Stars won the Cup, and this fanbase is aching for a championship.

Battle-tested are the words to define this team. Only 13 games remain to fine-tune this well-oiled machine. There are plenty of other great hockey teams out there, but the Stars have what it takes to be the best at the end of the season. The championship window remains open, but for how long?
