The Dallas Stars are 21-9-4 since Dec. 2, 2023 and are 19-4-4 when scoring first. The domination has launched Dallas to fourth overall in the National Hockey League with contributions coming from everywhere in the lineup, at the time of writing this article. They took over the division lead after bouncing up and down in the first couple months of the season. With two games scheduled against the division rivals Colorado Avalanche and Winnipeg Jets later this month, the playoff implications could not be greater.

Colorado has picked up their game in the latter half of the season. Honestly, the top three teams in the Central Division have all picked up their game, making the race to the top very competitive. If these two teams meet, it would be a rematch of the 2020 Second Round meeting that saw Dallas win in seven games. The clubs were on the path to meet in last spring until the Seattle Kraken defeated Colorado in the first round. The Stars and Avalanche are explosive with firepower throughout the lineup. Dallas holds the edge in forwards while the blue line is dominated by Colorado. Jake Oettinger is slightly better than Georgiev in save percentage and goals-against-average (GAA). Despite playing 12 less games, the Otter’s save percentage is .904 (Georgiev is .898) and GAA is 2.93 (Georgiev is 2.94). This would be a playoff classic matchup should they meet. The matchup favors the Stars.

Dallas has had Winnipeg Jets’ number this entire season. Scott Wedgewood backstopped Dallas to victory on Nov. 11 despite facing the majority of shots. Jake Oettinger pitched a 27-save shutout on Nov. 28 en route to a 2-0 win. The Stars defensive depth is better between these clubs, and honing in on that can tilt the ice Dallas’ way in a playoff series. Relying on speed and an aggressive forecheck, the Stars can beat the Jets in any type of game.

There has been one meeting between the Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars. The Stars, anchored by Oettinger, dominated early and then scored three unanswered in the third period to win 5-1 at American Airlines Center on Jan. 16. These clubs meet twice in March before, most likely, squaring off in the opening round. It would be the first postseason meeting between the historic franchises. The Kings lack the experience as well as firepower that Dallas has, which can tilt the ice in favor of Dallas.

Dallas opened the 2023-24 campaign with a home victory against the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis avenged the loss two months later. The Dallas are great when they’re playing with speed and physicality. Anyone who follows playoff hockey understands the importance of finishing hits and team defense. Although offense can get you points in the regular season, defense wins championships. It is a good sign that the two losses against St. Louis this season has been decided by one goal. The most goals Dallas surrendered to the Blues in regulation is three. Plus, St. Louis lost a critical game to the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Dallas has dominated the Predators this season. If the Blues can lose to the Predators, the Stars can outlast the Blues in a seven-game series.
