Many players don the victory green jersey of the Dallas Stars. Only a few of those players make lasting impacts on the franchise.
Players like Mike Modano and Jamie Benn are some legends that skated on home ice in Dallas.
One player is already pushing toward legendary status for the Stars. Jason Robertson is significantly impacting the team in a few short seasons.
Robertson broke the team record for most points in a single season last year with 109. His numbers are already staggering into the potential of becoming the best player in franchise history.
Storming Onto the Scene
The 2021 Stars ended on a disappointing note with a playoff miss. That season, Robertson made a name for himself with 45 points in 51 games during that rookie year. He finished 2nd in the Calder Trophy, voting behind Kirill Kaprizov.
He scored his first career NHL goal on a tip-in against the Chicago Blackhawks. That would be the first of many that season, with 17 in 51 games. His rookie season became a testament to the upcoming stardom of this player.
Sophomore Year
Robertson began averaging over a point per game during his 2nd year. His 79 points in 71 games finished second on the scoring for the team, but his goal-scoring prowess came to fruition. His 41 goals that season are something unseen on this team since the mid-1990s.
It became clear just how well this talented player started shaping up. This 39th overall draft pick in 2017 began showing how dominant of a force he is. It didn’t stop in his 2nd year. His performance helped the Stars get back to the playoffs, albeit a First Round exit in Game 7 of overtime.
The Franchise Year
High hopes were on the table for the Stars going into the 2022-2023 season. All eyes were focused on Jason Robertson going into the season, and he delivered. No one wearing a Dallas Stars uniform ever did what he did last season. 109 points in 82 games on the year is a gargantuan number. Only one other player scored as many goals as he did last season (46). Mike Modano scored 50 in 1993-1994, and Robertson almost got there.
If your name is on the same level as Mike Modano in this franchise, then you are doing something amazing. The Stars reached all the way to the Western Conference Final largely due to Jason Robertson’s contribution.
The Future
Jason Robertson is pivotal to the future of this team. There is a possibility that he will be captain whenever Jamie Benn retires. Robertson is still and has his entire career ahead of him. If he continues to put up these numbers every year, he can become the greatest player in franchise history. He is already number 1 on the franchise list with points-per-game with 1.11.
Jamie Benn, Joe Pavelski, and Tyler Seguin are the veterans of this franchise, with hundreds of games played. These players have the potential to win a Stanley Cup, but it’s the young ones that are paving the way to the future. Fellow players like Jake Oettinger and Roope Hintz are joining Robertson on this journey.
This team fell just short of the big dance last year, but this year is a new one. Who knows what Robertson will do, but he gets better every year.
His future is exciting, and he has the potential to become one of the all-time franchise greats.
