Less than a week ago, tragedy struck the Serbian capital of Belgrade as an elementary school was attacked by a teenage shooter. The thirteen-year-old suspect killed eight fellow classmates and a school guard while leaving at least 14 injured.
According to police, the perpetrator had planned the attack during the weeks to possibly months leading up, in which he had curated a ‘kill list.’ This list had priority levels of targeted children and classrooms. The suspect is also alleged to have used his father’s firearms in the onslaught.
While the motive of the attack is still unclear, the shooter has since been arrested along with both of his parents.
In response, Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic committed to pay for both the funeral services, as well as grief counseling for classmates and staff at this primary school.
Luka’s father, Sasha Doncic, along with a handful of other family members on his father’s side, are native Serbians.
“I am heartbroken by the tragic school shooting in Serbia and the loss of lives, including those of innocent school children. My thoughts are with the families and the entire community affected by this tragedy,” Doncic said in a statement.
“Through my foundation, I am exploring both immediate and long-term ways to support the students, faculty, and families affected by the shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School. I am committed, and I will continue to share updates and ways to support as details become available.”
The Luka Doncic Foundation is focused on improving the health and well-being of children.
Just days after the events in Belgrade, an additional mass shooting devastated the community of Allen, Texas.
Allen, of course, is just north of Dallas, where the Mavericks call home.
