The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 98- 96 on Wednesday in Oklahoma City. Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway, Davis Bertans, Maxi Kleber and new signing JaVale McGee did not play.
New trade acquisition Christian Wood scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds in 25 minutes. Rookie Jaden Hardy also scored 21 points in 24 minutes and really impressed while shooting 4-9 from the 3-pt line.
The starters played most of the first half and showed flashes of what this team could look like early on if the new and old pieces fit together.
The Mavericks as a unit shot almost 43 percent from the field and almost 32 percent from the 3-point line. The Mavs also had three more offensive rebounds than in their game five Western Conference loss to the Golden- State Warriors.
While most stats where very promising Head Coach Jason Kidd said the Mavericks need to be smarter with the ball.
“It’s better to get the turnovers out of the way in the pre-season we had 24 of them which is a lot for us,” said Kidd after the game.
The Oklahoma City Thunder were also missing a few key pieces including Shai Gilgeous- Alexander, Trey Burke, Mike Muscala, Lu Dort and Marquise Chriss.
While it was not the Thunder at full capacity it was still nice to see the Mavericks really compete and try to show that they are able to win without their Slovenian superstar.
The Mavericks continue they’re pre-season journey with games against the Orlando Magic on Friday before finishing pre-season against the Utah Jazz on Friday October 14th.
