The Texas Rangers have 11 starting pitchers on their 40 man roster who have big league experience. They also have 2 non roster invitees who have starting experience. There is also a group of young starting pitchers who have never made to the big leagues that are in camp. The competition for the rotation could be an interesting one to watch. There are really only two who have their spot locked down, Kyle Gibson and Kohei Arihara with Mike Foltynewicz likely winning a spot. The rest are competing for a spot, with no guarantees that there is one available.

The Rangers have not actually decided just how they will go at it this year. With a shortened 2020 season and only Arihara pitching over 100 innings, they may decide to get creative. After all they can’t expect 200 innings from anyone, nor should they. They have talked of possibly a 6 man rotation or the whole “opener’ route at the end of the rotation. While they are creative ideas, they could leave a hole in the bullpen for the one inning specialist. There is also talk of starting off Joe Palumbo in the  bullpen to ramp him back up from his ulcerative colitis flare up from last year. Predicting the final outcome is near impossible without anyone pitching in spring yet. But that’s a challenge I love to take on and fail miserably at. But first we have to look at the candidates.
