The 2020 season has officially ended with a 6-10 record, with the Cowboys finishing third in the NFC East.
While the season wasn’t a success, finishing where they did has allowed Dallas to own a top 10 pick in the 2021 draft.
The Cowboys have only held a top 10 pick three times in the last decade.
Those picks turned into Tyron Smith (2011), Morris Claiborne (2012), and Ezekiel Elliott (2016). While Claiborne didn’t pan out, it’s safe to say that Zeke and Tyron were both great picks. Both players, when healthy, have a case for themselves as top 5 players at their position.

Having a high pick allows teams to add a blue-chip player that could help turn things around. On top of having 6 picks, Dallas will be going in with some heavy ammunition due to their compensatory picks. Now the formula is far from being solved, but I’ve given it a great shot.
Dallas added some free agents last season but lost out on more players than they gained.
With the contracts signed by the players lost, Dallas will now be rewarded with up to 4 comp picks.

- Round 1
- Round 2
- Round 3
- Round 3 (Comp pick) from Byron Jones signing with Miami

Now the six picks on day 3 of the draft aren’t what fans would call sexy picks.
Over the past five seasons, however, Dallas has been able to find some hidden gems in the later rounds that have become effective starters or contributors.
- 2016 day 3 hits: (QB) Dak Prescott, (CB) Anthony Brown
- 2017 day 3 hits: (S) Xavier Woods
- 2018 day 3 hits: (TE) Dalton Schultz, (DE) Dorance Armstrong
- 2019 day 3 hits: (RB) Tony Pollard, (S) Donovan Wilson
- 2020 day 3 hits: (C) Tyler Biadasz
The 2020 draft class could still have a few more players rise to the occasion, but it is still too early.
The coming up year will give us a better insight into players like Bradley Anae, Reggie Robinson, and Neville Gallimore.
Will McClay and the Cowboys will have plenty of opportunities to bring in talent to help turn this team around.
