The saga of Earl Thomas joining the Cowboys seems like it is never-ending.
Every time the storyline seems to end something happens to re-open it.
Let us go back to where it all started. Towards the end of the season in 2017, the Cowboys had just played Seattle and after the game, Thomas was seen going to the Cowboys locker room. The media caught him exchanging words with former Dallas coach Jason Garrett.
Thomas told Garrett: “If yall have the chance, come get me.”
It was enough to cause a stir among Cowboys fans, but Thomas later clarified he was referring later in his career.
“I’m in the prime of my career. I still want to be here (Seattle). But when Seattle kicks me to the curb, please Cowboys come get me. That’s the only place I’d rather be” said Thomas.
The rumors started. Thomas was still in Seattle, but the end of his contract was looming and talks of a hold-out were starting to form. In 2018, Thomas held out as expected. He did not report to the Seahawks until days before the start of the season with no new contract.
In week four of the 2018 season, Thomas broke a bone in his leg and was put on injured reserve. The Seahawks did not re-sign Thomas at the end of the season.
Once Thomas hit the market as a free agent the hype from Cowboys fans exploded. Thomas was a Texas native, he had expressed interest in coming to Dallas, and no one had forgotten about his locker room visit.
The frenzy for Thomas went on for weeks, but in the end, he wanted more money than Dallas wanted to pay, especially in the Garrett era.
In 2019 the Ravens signed Thomas to a four-year $55 million contract.
In Dallas, any dreams of getting the all-pro safety were over, or so we thought.
The Ravens announced that Thomas would be leaving Baltimore. This was the response from the team after an altercation earlier in the week. On Friday, Thomas reportedly punched Chuck Clark. Baltimore stated that Thomas was “terminated for personal conduct that has adversely affected the team.”
This was a bit of a surprise for the league and the Thomas to Dallas rumors fired right up again. NFL reporters said that the Ravens could either trade Thomas or release him. If it was a trade the Cowboys probably would not be interested, but in the case of a release, they were the top landing spot for the safety.
Then it happened, the Ravens released Thomas.
It seems like the story between Thomas and the Cowboys just keeps going, but maybe it will end soon.
Could Thomas be wearing a star? We just have to wait and see.
