Before the 2020 season, everyone was looking at Ronald Guzman or Greg Bird to take the next step in their development for this team, but we have yet to see it.
Since the signing of Greg Bird, there was always a notion that there was going to be a competition at first base, and it’s been just that.
But, has either player really won the position yet?
Going into Wednesday, Guzman and Bird have not been good at the plate, going a combined 7-53 at the plate so far during the summer camp.
The thing is this, Isiah Kiner-Falefa is making his case for the starting third baseman spot, actually forcing semi-new Ranger Todd Frazier into the first base mix with the two youngsters.
Manager Chris Woodward spoke on the first baseman on Monday saying:
“I just need to know, especially in a 60-game season, that I can trust guys to be prepared, give a competitive effort, and be productive.”

Woodward will definitely need to take a hard look at all three options as the shorter season will come with shorter leashes for each player. Guzman’s defense has never been an issue, but his batting has become a liability in the lineup over the past season. Bird has the tools to become a solid player at the position as well, but it just hasn’t shown up fully yet aside from a home run this summer.
Frazier played first base on Monday and Wednesday, earning the start both days. Frazier brings the most professional experience of the now three main options for first, although he has mainly played third base in his career.
Woodward said this about Todd Frazier and his willingness to help the team by playing first.
“He is open to it. He wants to win, he doesn’t care. He sees what Kiner is doing, everyone does… I don’t think anybody is surprised by the move.”
The season is fast approaching and with many storylines lining up. First base is a position that has caught the eyes of many fans, and soon the Rangers will decide on who’s going to start the season at the corner spot.
Right now, the first base is up for grabs and the competition is heating up.
