The two-time US Open Cup champions will travel south on I-35 to play San Antonio FC in the fourth round to begin FC Dallas’ 2018 US Open Cup campaign. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 at 7:30 pm at Toyota Field in San Antonio. The two sides have played each other before back in 2014 at home with FC Dallas winning 2-0 at Toyota Stadium.
Under Oscar Pareja (2014 – current), FCD has faired rather well in the USOC with making the semifinals in 2014, the Round of 16 in 2015, champions in 2016 and making the quarterfinals in 2017.
Fun fact, the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in North America with its inception back in 1913-1914. The most successful teams that are still active in the MLS are the Chicago Fire, Seattle Sounders, and Sporting Kansas City each with 4 titles to their name. The name Lamar Hunt is the same Lamar Hunt that was a former owner of Dallas Burn/FC Dallas and the winner of the USOC qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League.
Given the fact that the USOC bears Lamar Hunt’s name, I feel that the team should make this tournament on of it priorities each year. Given the roster depth and the “play your kids” model that the Huntsmen have, the game against San Antonio FC will be a perfect opportunity for young and depth players to get a shot.
